Mount Moriah

Mount Moriah has many full time workers including 2 voluntary psychologists and 4 handicraft/drama teachers. There is excellent health care provided free of charge by a local company. Monte Moriah depends on donations and international fundraising in order to sustain the high level of care and to expand their work. Monte Moriah is the name of a children's home in Uberlandia, central Brasil, and the main focus of the Christmas project in Brasil. Monte Moriah is an amazing place - children who have been abandoned or abused, left homeless and hopeless, are provided with not only somewhere to live, but with a family and a church. An initiative of Sal da Terra Igreja Crista (Salt of the Earth Church), the local church took God's call to 'look after the orphans and widows' extremely seriously. The project began in the early nineties with a vision for 12 houses (on a plot of land donated to the church) with 8 or 9 children in each house. There would be a playground, football pitch (of course, this is Brasil) and even a small outdoor swimming pool (very hot here in summer). Each house would have a mother who would look after the children 24 hours a day. With 38 children on role, Mount Moriah home is rapidly expanding. The orphanage comprises of 5 homes at this moment, there is also a kiosk, a building where the children can socialise and entertain their friends. The low cost of building (a house can cost as little as just R$19,000, a little over £6,000, to build, and no more than R$5,000, less than £2,000, to fully furnish) means our money goes a long way here. (The money from the Christmas project also goes towards the upkeep of the children - food, clothes, medicine, etc.) It would also be great if you could write to the children - they love to receive cards and letters. Don't worry about not speaking Portuguese - a few Englishspeakers there will help to translate them.
